Chapter 7
Recovery

Kyle adjusted the sheets over him. He peeked under to look at his wrapped legs. They were bruised and swollen underneath, not that he could feel any pain there anyway. He sighed.

Blaine knocked on the door as he entered the hospital room. “Hey, there, kiddo.”

Kyle glared at Blaine.

Blaine sat on one of the chairs set by the bed. He placed a cigarette in his mouth. “How are you feeling?”

Kyle shook his head and chuckled. “Well, my best friend killed himself, so kind of grieving. Oh! And my legs are paralyzed. I'll never be able to walk again. So I'm doing fabulous.”

“Sorry to hear that.” Blaine folded his arms. He flicked the cigarette in his mouth with his tongue.

Kyle exhaled. “How's Oz and Mina?”

Blaine frowned. “Both will be fine. Mina just needs to sleep for a while and Oz will be in a full-body cast for a couple months.”

“I'm sorry. You must be so worried for Oz.”

“Just part of the job.” Blaine sighed. “I trust you'll stay quiet about everything that happened?”

“What would be the point of talking? People would throw me into an asylum in a heartbeat.”

“Probably.” Blaine chuckled. He handed Kyle his card. “Mina and I have decided to join the Huntsmen Association, after all. If you ever need anything, we'll just be a call away.”

“I don't get it. I thought Mina was dead.”

Blaine nodded. “As did I, until I got a tet from her with instructions on what her plan was.”

“So you knew she would show up?”

“The girl is stronger than you could imagine. And her desire for vengeance won't let her die.”

Kyle hung his head. “Jacob might have killed himself... but thank you for helping me save him.” Kyle forced a smile.

“You'll be all right, kid.” Blaine got to his feet. “You're strong too.” Blaine put a thermos on the night stand. “I'm sure you'll even get over the paralysis. Just gotta have faith.”

Kyle rolled his eyes, but somehow, it still made him smile. “What about Mrs. Dawson?”

Blaine lit his cigarette. “Samantha will be pronounced dead but the Huntsmen Association will be taking her under their care and protection. Mina believes this was just the beginning. Samhaerin will return one day and we will need all the firepower we can get.”

Kyle clenched the sheets. “I want to help. I want to avenge Jacob.”

Blaine shook his head. “Love the enthusiasm, but try to live a normal life, kid. This isn't the kind of life you want.”

“But it's exactly how you got into it! Why deny me from doing exactly what you did?!”

“You're not me and you're not Mina. You still have a family and a home to go back to. Forget this ever happened, kid. You just focus on walking again.”

“I will walk again. And one day I will find you two again.” Kyle's lip quivered. “I won't forget and I will help you stop Samhaerin.”

Blaine chuckled. He waved goodbye.

Blaine strolled through the hospital. He made a stop at room 2304 and peeked in. He grinned at the sight of Oz in a full-body cast. “About time you were forced to take a vacation.”

Oz extended his neck as far as he could. “Well, love, what a pleasant surprise.”

“Just coming to check in on you.” Blaine ran his fingers through Oz's hair.

“Thanks, babe. I'll be up and about in no time. Two months of nothing but sleep, food, and TV? I couldn't have asked for a better vacation.”

“You numbnut.”

“You know what would make it better? If you kept me company during my stay...” Oz fluttered his eyes.

“I wish I could, Oz, but Mina and I gotta go to the Huntsmen's headquarters.”

Oz raised an eye. “You're really doing it?”

Blaine shrugged. “It's Mina's decision. We're heading up right away. Besides, you were always the one who tried to get us to join.”

“Hm. I don't know if I agree with this.”

“We almost lost. If Samhaerin were to come back, we wouldn't be able to stop him again.” Blaine took a puff of his cigarette. “So Mina wants to start building a better defense.”

“I understand it, but I liked the fact that you two were rogues. Did things your way. Now you're going to conform to their rules.”

Blaine chuckled. “It's like you don't know us.” Blaine kissed Oz's forehead. “You focus on getting better. I'll visit you often.”

“You better.” Oz grinned.

“Oh. Keep an eye on the kid. He has a lot of potential.”

“Now you're leaving me with child? How rude.”

Blaine gave Oz another kiss before leaving the hospital. He approached the black car parked across the street. Mina sat in the backseat. She leaned against her door, fast asleep. Blaine crawled in.

“How are they?” Mina asked without opening her eyes.

“They'll be fine. Ready to commit to the Huntsmens Association?”

“No. But it's necessary.” Mina yawned. “However, we have a stop to make before we do that.” Blaine raised an eyebrow. Mina peeked out of one eye as she reached into her bag. She handed Blaine a file. “There's a case to check out.”

“So soon?”

“No rest for the wicked,” Mina said. She smiled as she went back to sleep.
